My single of the week this week is by Ten Walls and their brilliant 'Walking with Elephants'.
This came out in August, and has been in the charts about 4 weeks. Its currently sitting at number 20 in the UK singles chart.
That chart position does not do it justice. This is an instrumental track, no words or vocals at all. Just a thumping base and a dance/house style. Apparently, this track was favoured by DJ Annie Mac to add to its kudos and credentials.
The accompanying video is quite possibly one of the most fascinating to watch and at the same time immensely weird I have ever seen. It starts off with men clothed head to foot in black, faces covered, running out of black unmarked houses. They run across a field, where they are joined by more running men clothed head to foot in white. They run onwards to the waters edge and jump in.
Then, they are in and out of the water like dolphins, gracefully sweeping in and out of the waves. They reach land again, and continue to run towards a tower. Then they form together inside the tower in the shape of non other than yes, you guessed it, an elephant (think winners of BGT last year). Odd but strangely fitting for the song.
Ten Walls is actually a deep house artist named Mario Basanov. This track is true to his roots with its bassy tone, but its the smooth horn notes playing throughout (that also make you think of elephants incidentally) that marks this as different. Its not a background club track, its a stand alone.
It is reminiscent of tracks out some years ago, but its also fresh enough to breathe life into it. It makes you tap your foot, it takes me to a happy place and the pace is a great gym track so its now a firm favourite on my playlist.
This seems to be a divisive track in that some love it, some hate it, but whichever camp you fall into, drop me a comment and let me know what you think.
