Day seven of My Week with Madonna and my final choice is 'Hollywood'.
Hollywood was released as a single in 2003. It was the second single from her album American Life, which was released the same year. It hit number 2 in the UK charts.
Hollywood sounds glamorous. The reality she was aiming for though seems to be that its a superficial and largely fake life.
The lyrics are poignant 'they like the smell of it in Hollywood' 'How could it hurt you when it looks so good'. The general theme being that everyone wants to be successful in Hollywood but the reality is that fame is not all its cracked up to be.
The video to this is mega. Madge in various guises as a groomed blonde, a wild brunette and a crazy red head. She dance like Beautiful Stranger as a redhead in a silky outfit. Does the splits and all manner of erotic sexy dancing as a brunette. As a blonde, she is in trademark corset and stockings.
It cuts though to botox injections, fillers in the lips and the darker side of looking so good for the cameras.
Madonna's vocals sound squeaky again in this track, but somehow it suits this one, despite her advanced years by this point. Very girl like and innocent, which I figure is the point really.
Right at the end of this one she suddenly raps - 'push the button, don't push the button, trip the station, change channel'. Its unusual but it kind of works. Not sure she's up there with the great rappers, but its a good effort!!
Hollywood is dance driven, fast paced and cleverly written. Its a more stylistic number than a lot of the bubblegum numbers of her early years, and clearly is making a point. The whole album was influenced by the mood in America post 2001, and a more sombre theme runs throughout.
In my humble opinion, American Life is her best ever album. This track is a stand-out amongst many great songs.
And there we have it. My last choice of My Week with Madonna. Its all over. Catch me tomorrow when I choose the top spot from my seven choices.
