Day Five of My Week with the Foo Fighters and today its 'Best of You'.
Best of You was the lead single from the album In Your Honour. The album and the single were released in 2005. This was a high charting single for the band, reaching number 4 in the UK singles chart.
This is a really big song. Foo songs always are, but this is more powerful, more snarly and more raw than any of my previous choices. It actually makes you feel the emotion of it in a way that other songs just fail to.
It starts quietly, but not softly, with "I've got another confession to make" and off we go. Its pretty mid tempo but absolutely packed with guitars, drums and Grohl. Think early Kings of Leon vibe, but of course the Foo's pre-date.
Its really thought provoking, and clearly venting some anguish or painful experience. Lyrics such as "were you born to resist, or be abused", and "I'm getting tired of starting again" really show the underlying depth of feeling. Its not one for a cheer up song. It is good if you need to vent.
The video is mainly the band. Close ups of Grohl snarling his amazing powerful vocals into the mike. The video flits to stills and video clips of wild animals hunting, photo's of childhood, a car crash with crash test dummies amongst other powerful images. It tells the story that the song does - life, death, pain and survival.
What a song. You need to go listen to this, because its just amazing. Drop me a comment when you have and tell me how it made you feel.
