I have chosen to spend my next week with The Killers. I shall choose 7 songs, 1 per day, and review each one. Then I shall decide which was my favourite. But before we begin, lets take a closer look at the band and the music shall we?
The Killers are a four piece American indie rock band. Actually they come from Las Vegas! The band consist of Brandon Flowers on lead vocals and keyboard, Dave Keuning on guitar and backing vocals, Mark Stoermer on bass and backing vocals and Ronnie Vannucci Jr on drums and percussion.
Brandon Flowers was already in a band, but when he was ejected from his band back in 2001, he decided to form his own! By 2002 The Killers had their current line up and had started to play and write together.
In 2003 they were signed to British label Lizard King Records. 2003 also saw them release their first single 'Mr Brightside'. I think its fair to say it was a bit of a success and later that year they signed for another record label - Island Def Jam.
Their debut album 'Hot Fuss' was released in 2004. It was a huge success, reaching the number 1 spot in the UK album chart, and it was around forever. It got lots of critical acclaim including best new band awards, grammy nominations and an NME award. Hot Fuss was such a mind blowing album. It was slow, fast, hard hitting and powerful, but somehow different.
Their second album 'Sam's Town' was released in 2006. Once again the second album was a success, reaching the number 1 spot in the UK album chart. It had mixed reviews from critics though, but still the band were winning awards - Brits and NME.
In 2007 they released a sort of compilation album called 'Sawdust'. It was mainly B-sides and unreleased material.
Their third album was released in 2008. 'Day & Age' was another number 1 in the UK albums chart. This one was described as more playful, and it features lots of unusual instruments - sax, steel drums - you name it! After the album tour, they went on a break for a little while.
They returned with the release of their fourth album in 2012. 'Battle Born' also reached the number 1 spot in the UK album chart. They then released a greatest hits compilation album 'Direct Hit's in 2013, ten years on from their debut album.
The Killers have caused quite a stir over the years both with their music and their opinions, with Brandon in particular being quite the flamboyant character of the group. He has also had success as a solo artist with his album 'Flamingo' which he released in 2010 and also hit the number 1 spot here in the UK.
In total they have released 4 albums, 2 compilation albums and 18 singles. I've actually seen them live at the V Festival quite a few years ago, and they were fantastic. Really looking forward to listening to their output over the next week.
