Day 7 of my week with The Killers and for my final choice its 'Somebody Told Me'.
'Somebody Told Me' was the second single from their debut album 'Hot Fuss'. It was released in 2004, then re-released in 2005 where it reached number 3 in the UK singles chart.
This was the follow up to Mr Brightside. Its not quite as catchy but it reached higher in the chart and it still has their characteristic alt rock / rock star quality with their own modern twist. Big guitars and synthesisers make this a darker song than their debut.
The video is another simple number. Just the band in the desert doing their thing against a huge electronic screen across which flashes the bands name and the silhouette of a woman dancing.
Its where the lyrics kick in that takes this from a good song to a great song. It starts with "breaking my back just to know your name" then "heaven ain't close in a place like this, anything goes but dont blink you might miss". Then it gets to the chorus "somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year". Then my favourite line "never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight".
I'm not too sure what they are getting at with the girlfriend / boyfriend thing except maybe hinting that the girlfriend is cheating? Possibly with a woman - but who knows. What I love is the pace of it and how it makes you think. Its one of those songs that you start off singing the words you think are being said with no clue at time what he's saying!!
This is such a great song, and its the last one of my week with The Killers. You can check out days 1-6 over at My Music page plus loads more - just click here. Happy listening :)
