Day 6 of my week with Goldfrapp and its 'Happiness'.
'Happiness' was released in 2008. It was the second single from their 2008 album 'Seventh Tree'. The album was a more sultry number, and this track in particular is very light and airy and breathy.
'Happiness' is still electro but less pop more folk. Alison's vocals sound so delicate in this and lifts the song up. Its very sci-fi like - a bit out of the ordinary and surreal.
The video is another eccentric number which I'm realising is the norm for Goldfrapp. It features a man in a pure white suit jumping down the street like a Duracell bunny!! He just keeps going! I found myself wondering how anyone could jump for that long without collapsing yet he looks totally cool. As he goes down what is clearly a London street, he passes Alison in several cameo's - as a flower seller and a police lady to name but two. Will also features in several roles. Its an upbeat light hearted video, ending with him jumping with some children.
'Happiness' reached number 25 in the UK singles chart. Presumably due in part to this songs summery feel - think Lily Allen.
The lyrics are dreamlike "time stops still when you've lost love" and "Happiness, how'd you get to find love, real love". Very floaty and ethereal with a jaunty beat to it and lots of synthesized electronic backing sounds. Beautiful.
So there we have day 6 'Happiness'. You can find days 1-5 plus loads more over at My Music page - just click here. Let me know what you think and happy listening :)
