My Week with INXS Day 1 - Mystify

Day 1 of my week with INXS and for my first choice its 'Mystify'.

'Mystify' was released as the fifth single from their 1987 album 'Kick'. The single was released in 1989. This was the first single I remember hearing by them and I loved it.

I have just watched the video, and its the first time I have ever seen it. Its a black and white shot of Michael Hutchence and Andrew Fariss who wrote it. It starts with them discussing how the song starts, and then Hutchence kicks in with his vocals. Its actually quite haunting seeing him cut back to basics in black and white, just him and his co-writer and that voice.

It then cuts to INXS on stage, with Hutchence transforming to his stage persona - flamboyant red jacket and putting on the show. Its such a sharp contrast between the two, and reminds you just what a beautiful man he was.

On 'Mystify' Hutchence shows his softer sound. Its less brash, more gentle and clearly about love or possibly lust!

I particularly love the lyrics on this track. "Some silken moment, goes on forever and we're leaving broken hearts behind", then later "In all that exists, none have your beauty, I see your face, I will survive". Wow, if ever someone said that to me I would melt!

'Mystify' reached number 14 in the UK singles chart. It should have been higher. this track really shows Hutchence's range and the quality of his vocals. Such a talent.

There we have it then, Day 1 - 'Mystify'. You can check out all my previous choices and more about this band and others over at My Music page here. Happy listening :)
