My Retro Single of the Week - Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

This week I have chosen a real classic for my retro single of the week - Rick Astley with 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

Released back in 1987, this song really does take me back. Yes, it was naff, yes, Rick's dancing in the video is embarassing, but actually, looking back, its kind of cool in a weirdly naff dad dancing sort of a way!!

This was yet another output from the music making machine that was Stock, Aitken, Waterman that were so huge back in the day. Think Kylie, Jason, Sonia and the lovely Rick!!

'Never Gonna Give You Up'  was catchy and pure pop. It was the first single from Rick, and it came from his debut album Whenever You Need Somebody, which was released the same year.

For all its pop perfection, it was still the ultimate cheesy tune, but we all loved it and its not surprising to learn that it became a huge hit, hitting the number one spot not just here in the UK, but pretty much everywhere!!

Despite its success - number 1 in no less than 25 countries, this song was destined to disappear into the realms of the past gone by, until Rick-rolling began back in 2007. For some strange reason, which I have never fathomed, this song became huge again, when an internet prank led people unknowingly to this video. I'm sure Rick didn't mind, as really put him back in the picture for an entirely new generation!

Rick turned 50 this year, and marked it by releasing an album 50. Given that it reached number one on the uk album chart, he clearly still has a lot of fans out there, not least because of the rick-rolling which catapulted him back into our lives.

So, here we have a cheesy pop tune from the 80's which has somehow become mainstream again thanks to the internet. With lyrics like "Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, Never gonna run around and desert you" I defy you not to be singing this for days to come!! Its that sort of song.

Rick Astley has become much more cool as he grows older, but I bet he can still throw some of "those" moves from the original video that were so appealing / come embarassing. Long live the 80's!!

If you have somehow missed this phenomenon either first time around or in its later reprisal, then you need this in your life. Go take a listen and enjoy :)
