Retro Single of the Week - Simply Red- Holding Back the Years

For my retro single of the week this week I have chosen the classic 'Holding Back the Years' from Simply Red.

Released initially in 1985, it only reached number 51 in the UK singles chart. Taken from their debut album Picture Book in 1985, it was then re-released as a single the following year and reached number 2 in the singles chart.

Simply Red are a British group, fronted by Mick Hucknall. Various line ups since the band formed have happened over the years, resulting in them disbanding for a period before reformed. Hucknall has always been a constant though with his beautiful vocals.

On 'Holding Back the Years' his vocals are breathtaking. You cannot listen to this track without feeling emotional - its just perfect. Apparently, he also wrote this song, originally when he was 17, drawing on his own personal experiences. It makes it even more bittersweet - this is not a happy song. It makes you want to cry its so utterly deep.

Simply Red are part pop, part soul, and nowhere is that combination more perfect than this track. The vocals, the words, the music - its one of those rare songs where everything combines and the total of the parts is bigger than the its individual pieces. Music rarely gets better than this.

If you've somehow never heard this, go listen immediately - if you have then go and listen immediately and reminisce! Wonderful song. If you want more singles of the week and music stuff, why not check out My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)
