One of my favourite films ever - 28 Day Later. This is not a film for the faint hearted as its post apocalypse, zombie genre is not for everyone!
The screenplay was written by Alex Garland, yes, he of The Beach fame. Directed by Danny Boyle - yes, him who orchestrated the Olympics! Starring many actors who are now known, but were not when this came out, not least of which being Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris and Brendan Gleeson.
It all starts because animal rights types try and release monkeys that unfortunately have been infected with rage. Cillian Murphy, 28 days later, wakes up in a hospital. A deserted hospital. He shouts for help, but noone hears. He soon ventures out into the streets of London and finds devastation.
Selena (Harris) rescues him. Unfortunately Jim (Cillian) doesn't grasp the extent of the problem. When he lights a candle when back at his home, he invites unwanted attention. Selena is quick to demonstrate what has to be done as a repercussion! Jim finally gets it.
They find 2 survivors - a taxi driver (Gleeson) and his daughter Hannah. The story then becomes one of survival against the odds. The odds being against the zombie nation of course.
My fav bits are raiding the supermarket and the eerie way he wanders through the streets of London. How Boyle managed to make London so deserted is beyond me. Even London in the early hours of the morning is never that quiet. The people going to the tube, to work, from the airports. How did he do that?
This is an epic film. Its on now, on Film4 if you are reading live. If not, go find it, go watch it, get a pillow to hide behind and enjoy :)
