My Retro Single of the Week - Tracy Chapman - Fast Car

For my Retro Single of the Week this week I have chosen the absolute classic from Tracy Chapman - 'Fast Car'.

Tracy Chapman is an American artist, and whilst she has had other hits, and won accolades and awards, this is by far the stand out track from such a talented lady. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1964. She released 'Fast Car' in 1988, when she was just 24 years old.

'Fast Car' was the lead single from her debut album self titled Tracy Chapman. It reached number 4 in the UK singles chart, putting her firmly on the map. Her rich deep vocals, and the simplicity yet power of the track just appealed and caught the public consciousness.

This is one of those songs that has been covered by many artists, yet despite its age, young people know it and recognise it as great, and more than that, it still sounds amazing. Its an all time classic in that regard.

Its actually quite a sombre song, and its more than a bit folksy, but just plays beautifully. It has the right mix of catchy lyrics, pure vocal talent and a beautiful musical accompaniment that just takes it to another level.

So there we have it, my retro single of the week. Let me know if you love 'Fast Car', and if you want more music stuff then just check out My Music page here.
