Day four of my week with Amy Winehouse and today its 'Back to Black'.
Back to Black is the name of Amy's second album, and also the title of this single, the third to be taken from the album of the same name. It was released in 2007.
This is a very dark song indeed. Back to Black is all about hurt. Apparently, this song, co-written by Amy, was referring to her ex who had left her. Mark Ronson produced, this is another fabulous number that sounds vintage, whilst still with a modern twist.
Her voice is breathtaking on this song in particular. So deep, so soulful, so much emotion. Also, in hindsight, a little premonitory. Amy did indeed go back to black. Life imitating art.
The song's accompanying video adds even more eerie coincidence. Its shot in black and white, and sees Amy attending a funeral. The headstone originally read RIP Amy Winehouse's heart, but after she died, it was taken out of the video. Its still the video of a funeral though, which adds a more disturbing element to this dark tale.
Back to Black was a top 40 hit on release, but it reached its peak at number 8 in the UK singles chart after her death.
Amy Winehouse was an icon. Stylish, talented, and original. This song was her at her very best, and will forever be a haunting reminder of a great talent, taken far too young.
This is well worth a listen, so pop it on and turn it up loud. You can check out my previous choices at My Music page here. I usually say happy listening, but its not appropriate for this particularly morose ditty. Just enjoy.
