My Book of the Month - The Teacher by Katerina Diamond

My book of the month for March is The Teacher by Katerina Diamond. Now, before I begin with this one, I must issue you this warning - this is seriously gruesome so be prepared if you decide to read this one!

So, it begins with a teacher. He is given a choice of a macabre tortured demise, or to escape that option by taking the only other way out - suicide. But is it really suicide when you have no choice? That's the dilemma this opens with and the shocks just keep coming.

This book explores the darker recesses of the human condition, with sadistic cult like behaviours, good versus evil, twisting and turning and you just do not see what is coming next.

Two disgraced cops are put together, but somehow they work together in a way where ultimately, they are forced to only be able to trust one another as the web spins wider and questions of trust hang over each and everyone of those around them.

As the perpetrator of the most heinous and graphic crimes, as the reader, you should be rooting for him to be caught, but this book is clever. Somehow setting the scene that the bad guy really isn't the bad guy. Will the police on the case catch him, and more importantly, will he be held accountable for his crimes?

I have not read a more thrilling thriller for a good many years. This is new, fresh, and the story line so clever, so scary and dark, and yet so well thought through - its a rare thing indeed.

I've not read any of Diamond's work before- a fact that will most certainly change in the future having read this one. Highly recommended to those with a strong stomach!

Retro Single of the Week - Simply Red- Holding Back the Years

For my retro single of the week this week I have chosen the classic 'Holding Back the Years' from Simply Red.

Released initially in 1985, it only reached number 51 in the UK singles chart. Taken from their debut album Picture Book in 1985, it was then re-released as a single the following year and reached number 2 in the singles chart.

Simply Red are a British group, fronted by Mick Hucknall. Various line ups since the band formed have happened over the years, resulting in them disbanding for a period before reformed. Hucknall has always been a constant though with his beautiful vocals.

On 'Holding Back the Years' his vocals are breathtaking. You cannot listen to this track without feeling emotional - its just perfect. Apparently, he also wrote this song, originally when he was 17, drawing on his own personal experiences. It makes it even more bittersweet - this is not a happy song. It makes you want to cry its so utterly deep.

Simply Red are part pop, part soul, and nowhere is that combination more perfect than this track. The vocals, the words, the music - its one of those rare songs where everything combines and the total of the parts is bigger than the its individual pieces. Music rarely gets better than this.

If you've somehow never heard this, go listen immediately - if you have then go and listen immediately and reminisce! Wonderful song. If you want more singles of the week and music stuff, why not check out My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)

What I'm Watching this Week

  • Billions. We have set to watching series 1 again and its even better second time around. Just about to start series 2. The tension in the last episode was awesome to behold. The two men facing each other, both trying to outdo the other. Electrifying. My best moment of series 1 though just has to be Dollar Bill's return where Axe pretends to fight with him, whilst saying I love you like a brother. Amazing stuff - cannot wait to get stuck in to series 2.

  • Benidorm. Loving Mr Woo and his silly jokes this evening! I still think its lacking something from the first few series, but its still entertaining and fun to watch. Rough, cheap and cheerful characters, with gutter humour and innuendo - whats not to like?

  • The Walking Dead. Finally, it looks like Negan is going to be confronted! I don't think I would be happy if my other half ever said he could survive without me like Rick said to Michone, but then again, I have never experienced a zombie virus outbreak but even so... Anyway - I need some serious kick ass here - Negan is the worst and surely he has to pay for his crimes now. Come on gang - go get him!!

  • Emmerdale. What goings on this week - underage sex, cyber trolling, dementia, abusive controlling Pierce - creepy, and poor Aaron. Brilliant stuff in the Dales at the moment. So want Moira and Cain to get back together then it would be better still. Loving Chaz and Cain's mum though - such an embarassing mum, but still a great character to bring in.

Today's Reasons to be Cheerful post

Today was a good day, so thats first on the list for reasons to be cheerful. I am tired in a satisfied way. I have worked my butt off physically - 2 lots of zumba on the wii, plus abs, squats and lots of other exercises. It feels good.

I have eaten healthily, and for once, I am feeling like whilst I am not a goal weight, that is not the measure of my happiness. My life has always been on a yo-yo in parallel to my weight. If I am slimmer, I am happier. Nonsense. From now on, whilst I am not going to become heavier, I am going to lighten up and stop being a damn diet bore. This revelation is a great reason to be cheerful!!

I am right now, as I write this, on my sofa, recliner up, whiskey and diet coke in hand, with my gorgeous 9 month old puppy on my lap - currently upside down snoring!! I feel utterly content right now and all feels right with the world.

My Diet and exercise weekly round up

Its been a good week for the diet and exercise plan this week. I have been to the gym, worked hard on the garden project, eaten well and exercised at home too.

I have got in two good sessions at the gym and worked very hard - running, walking on incline, stepper, cross trainer, bike and abs work. I have done 2 lots of 45 minutes Zumba session on the Wii fit. I have done squats, abs and floor exercises at home, plus a few burpees and jumps.

Monday - Friday we were outdoors putting down sleepers to make raised beds, edge the existing ones and create a more structured and beautiful look for our place. Then we started to work on the pergola. The existing one is rotten, but weaving the new wood into wisteria, honeysuckle and clematis is not easy. We have 4 posts in place now, plus the rails and support beams - its looking good, but not even halfway through. That has meant lots of lifting and maneuvering and hard work. 7

I have eaten healthily - lots of veggies and fruit, goji berries and home made soup. I have worked really hard this week. Here's hoping the scales go my way this week!!

I need to get one a half stone off in 5 weeks, which is not going to happen, but I might get closer to it at least.

Things to do in March

March brings with it Spring. The nights get lighter, the temp gets milder, the birds start to sing and the green shoots start to push through.

March is the perfect month to do some this:

- Spring Cleaning - give your house a top to bottom

- Change your Clocks - Spring Forward an hour

- Get some fresh air - get outdoors and make the most of the nights getting lighter

- Display some spring flowers - daffodils, tulips, narcissus - brighten up your outside

- Open your windows - let some air in

- Turn the heating down - its time to get that thermostat down a notch

- Work up a sweat - it will soon be summer, get your beach body started now

- Get your car valeted - remove the evidence of rainy muddy days and McD wrappers!

- Ditch those woolly jumpers - its not that cold now!

All in all, March is the month to get your house in order, brighten up your world and dust away the winter. Its Spring - make the most of it! :)

Pampering afternoon - all for me :)

I am looking forward to this afternoon. No work for me today. Plus, I am booked in for my nails at 1, followed by having my hair cut at 3.30.

That means my mitts will look sparkly and polished again, and my greys will be gone. For age 40, I'm quite pleased that I don't have too many, but with being dark haired, they really show themselves, little buggars!

So from 1pm onwards, its all about me for a couple of hours! Yay!!

My nails take roughly an hour, then I've got an hour or so to kill before I get to the salon for my barnet. What can I do with my time I wonder?

Maybe a spot of Christmas shopping perhaps? Or maybe I might treat myself to some new clothes. Or maybe both!!

Ooh yes, me time. Excellent. :)

My Single of the Week - The Chainsmokers & Coldplay - Something Just Like This

My single of the week this week is the brilliant new collaboration from The Chainsmokers and Coldplay with 'Something Just Like This'.

I heard this for the first time on The Brits when they performed it live and it blew me away. I am a massive Coldplay fan anything, but I also love the Chainsmokers new stuff as well.

The Chainsmokers are an American duo, and of course Coldplay hail from Blighty. The Chainsmokers had their first hit back in 2014, whereas Coldplay have been going since 1996 and hit the big time with 'Yellow' back in 2000.

On paper, this combination shouldn't work but it sounds like it should have been obvious that these two groups would in fact work like a dream. Chris Martin's vocal range is superb - from the soft and deep start it builds to a real climax, which combined with the guitar and the electro synth gives it something special and really dramatically satisfying.

I love the lyrics to this song 'I'm not looking for somebody with some super human gifts, some superhero, some fairytale bliss, just something I can turn to, somebody I can kiss'.

Its just a really uplifting feel good song and it was an immediate tune for me. If you haven't heard it go and take a listen and let me know what you think of it. If you want more singles of the week and music stuff you can find it over at My Music page - just click here. Happy listening :)
