My Book of the Month - The Teacher by Katerina Diamond

My book of the month for February is The Teacher by Katerina Diamond. Now, before I begin with this one, I must issue you this warning - this is seriously gruesome so be prepared if you decide to read this one!

So, it begins with a teacher. He is given a choice of a macabre tortured demise, or to escape that option by taking the only other way out - suicide. But is it really suicide when you have no choice? That's the dilemma this opens with and the shocks just keep coming.

This book explores the darker recesses of the human condition, with sadistic cult like behaviours, good versus evil, twisting and turning and you just do not see what is coming next.

Two disgraced cops are put together, but somehow they work together in a way where ultimately, they are forced to only be able to trust one another as the web spins wider and questions of trust hang over each and everyone of those around them.

As the perpetrator of the most heinous and graphic crimes, as the reader, you should be rooting for him to be caught, but this book is clever. Somehow setting the scene that the bad guy really isn't the bad guy. Will the police on the case catch him, and more importantly, will he be held accountable for his crimes?

I have not read a more thrilling thriller for a good many years. This is new, fresh, and the story line so clever, so scary and dark, and yet so well thought through - its a rare thing indeed.

I've not read any of Diamond's work before- a fact that will most certainly change in the future having read this one. Highly recommended to those with a strong stomach!

What I'm Watching this Week

  • Quiz shows - on a bit of a quiz show roll this week. So far, we've watched Tipping Point, The Chase and Tenable!! We fancy ourselves pretty knowledgeable but invariably we struggle on the odd question - how some of these people know so much is beyond me, but it makes you so competitive!

  • Emmerdale. I love Emmerdale at the moment. Robert and Aaron back together, finally, Chaz finding out she's preggers with Paddy, the whole Charity and Vanessa romance. Brilliant stuff. The Ross acid attack is harrowing to watch though, and the new vicar is an idiot. Its just so well written, and such great actors. Very sad about the David and Tracy storyline, as she does love him and he has been a naughty boy. You just never know what is going to happen.

  • Coronation Street. Trouble on the cobbles again - Phelan still behaving abysmally now telling Nicola he never wants to see her again - great father he is! Gary and Sarah finally back together, but Bethany being a royally spoilt brat - yes, she's been traumatized,  but she's just so horrible to Craig and anyone and everyone else. As to Craig - how is it that noone is finding his behaviour a tad bit odd? Come on, someone help him.

  • Bates Motel. Working my way through this on boxsets, and so many people already absolutely criminal!! Not even close to Norman becoming what he will yet, but his mother is clearly bonkers, his brother is clearly dangerous, his mother's boyfriend appears to be a kidnapper despite being a cop - blimey!! Great casting make for a beautiful view, atmospheric and totally in keeping with its predecessors whilst being new at the same time. Loving it!

  • The Sinner. Well we binge watched this highly rated box set. Just one series, and 8 episodes. It stars Jessica Biel, and Bill Pullman. I've not really seen her in anything before, and only ever seen Bill in roles where he is nice - like Sleepless in Seattle, and While you Were Sleeping, and in films like Independence Day and Lake Placid. He is none of those in this - he is crumpled, pervy, totally likeable and brilliant at the same time. Biel is mesmerizing as the cold blooded killer who turns out to be something else entirely. This is drama at its best, and hoping for another series based on this. Fabulous stuff.

What I'm Watching This Week

  • Emmerdale. I'm both shocked and applaud Emmerdale for its brave storyline with Ross and the acid attack. It was truly awful to watch, but people are going through this for real, so its good that a high profile show is showing the devastating impact. Maybe it might make someone think twice. The story with Liv and Gabby has been very sad to watch as Liv struggles with her feelings of well, no feelings for boys, or girls. Its been shown very honestly, and both are great young actresses. Debbie struggling with her guilt, but will she make it worse for Ross if she cracks and tells him? The Tracey's past has come back to haunt her, but with David having his own dark secrets literally anything could happen. Tense stuff this week.

  • Orange is the New Black. We are working through boxsets and this is a new one for us. We are about 5 episodes in, and already hooked. Its actually quite shocking when, a few shows in, you find out its based on a true story. Crikey!! Its not for the squeamish that's for sure - literally no privacy, even in the loo, and a bit graphic at times, but its so real you cannot help but somehow relate to the characters woes. Will Piper and Alex become friends, more than friends or will love blossom elsewhere? One things for sure - nothing is for sure in this one.

  • Gavin and Stacey. We having something of a retro binge this week - nothing better than a bit of classic Gav and Stacey comedy. Its only when you watch shows again, that you realise that in fact the humour for the most part, is not Gav or indeed Stacey. No - its Smithy and Nessa, Bryn and Gav's parents Mick and Pam who provide the laugh out louds. Stacey is a bit annoying, Gav a bit wet, but as an ensemble - pure genious.

  • Corrie. Well those cobbles are seeing some action at the moment!! Pat Phelan is still alive and well, and Eileen as blissfully ignorant as ever now proves she's also rubbish at spotting a drug addict aka Billy the worst priest ever in soap. Brilliant recoupling of Daniel and Sinead on a brighter note, and I have so got to buy me one of those corsets!! Phewf! Courtesy of Carla as she goes in for the kidney transplant. Aiden altogether too calm about all things transplant donor, finally cracks, as he sobs after the op in heart wrenching scenes.

My Retro Single of the Week - Kylie - Can't Get You Out of My Head

My retro single of the week is Kylie with her classic 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'.

Can't Get You Out of My Head is probably Kylie's most famous songs. It was released in 2001 and was the lead single from her eighth album Fever.

The most memorable part of this song is the "la la la" which really gets in your head, to the point where you can't get it out of your head either! Presumably, the song is about her lover and not being able to get him out of her head.

Its a dance track with a mid paced and kind of hypnotic beat to it. Kylie sings "la la la" throughout the song in a sort of robotic style. Her voice sounds breathy and beautiful as she obsesses over her desire. "I just can't get you out of my head, boy your loving is all I think about".

The sex appeal in the video matches the sexiness of the song. Lets make no bones about this - Kylie looks smoking. Perfect in fact. Another iconic image is her in that white jumpsuit with the hood. It is very revealing, but because its done so subtly, its sexy not in your face. Think Angelina Jolie not Nicki Minaj!

There are lots of costumes, lots of dance sequences and its just brilliant. Futuristic setting, lots of monochrome. This is a very stylish video. Kylie moves beautifully, and the various outfits are all equally head turning, with the show stopper being that white jumpsuit of course.

Can't Get You Out of My Head was a number 1 hit in the UK singles chart. It was a massive hit pretty much everywhere in fact.

This is one amazing song. Kylie at her absolute best. I love this track. Pure pop genius!

Stunning Sunsets - Wonderful winter skies

So baby its cold outside as the song goes - winter is in its deepest throws where we are. There have been mists and cooler temperatures, but also the most beautiful clear blue skies and glorious burning sky sunsets to behold.

Quite literally the sky looked like it was on fire.

Another night was a more icy affair with stunning blues and pinks as the sun began to go down. The most beautiful scenes both evenings.

Yes, when I reach goal weight, or holiday, whichever comes first, I can finally have some wine!! But only, and I repeat, only, if I get under that stone mark!! I have to earn it.

So that is today's reason. Bribery. Works a treat with me :)

2018 Resolutions - Recap

Resolution number 5: Be Stylish

Looking back at some of my favourite pics of me, there really aren't that many I like, but of those that I do, its always holidays I tend to look my best on.

So my resolution for this year is to be stylish full stop. Not just on holiday!!

Resolution number 4: Make and Save Money

Yes, its that time of year when the finances need an overhaul. The mission this year is to make more money, which is possibly on most people's lists, but also to save more money - double impact!!

The plan is to change job, earn more income wise. Then look at renewals for insurances and cashback opportunities. Also using coupons and vouchers and loyalty schemes.

Bulk buy goods at the cheapest price. Sell unwanted stuff, use less petrol and spend less on food and drink. The impact there will not only be on the old bank balance, but will reduce outgoings as well as having the nice side effect of helping my diet!!

Resolution number 3: Be Beautiful

I have had my issues with confidence over the years. However, now I am 40 I have just decided to stop worrying and be "beautiful" if to noone else but myself.

I have silly skin that still flares up, I have some wrinkles and some grey hair and I am definitely not beach ready at the moment, but so what?

I can have fun with what I have, I am not huge, I am not that bad looking wise, so my resolution this year is to treat myself kindly as if I am beautiful and to make the most of what I have.

Resolution number 2: Lose Weight

This year, I am taking a different approach to my resolutions. I always say "reach goal weight", then I lose some weight, I enjoy my new found confidence, then take great holidays and gain it again.

So, rather than set myself a "target" I am just going to set myself the goal to lose weight. However much I can, until I feel good.

Resolution number 1: Learn Spanish

Last year, 2017, I made a start at learning Spanish. This year I want to actually start to speak it properly - I know a few words now, but I need sentences, conversation - general stuff.

My Single of the Week - Craig David - I Know You Featuring Bastille

My single of the week this week is from Craig David with 'I Know You' featuring Bastille.

Now this is one of those songs that you hear, then find out who sings it, and you would never have realised who it was. It is in fact Craig David, but he sounds soulful and deep, and extra kudos were it needed with collaborating with the very brilliant and unique sound of Bastille. I wouldn't have put these two together, but the end result is fantastic.

'I Know You' was released at the end of 2017 as the second single from Craig's album The Time Is Now, which is his seventh album. Its also his first collaboration with Bastille.

Bastille are a British band, that are a bit indie, a bit rock, a bit pop - like a blend, so you never know what you are going to get, whilst they have a distinctive sound. They've been going since 2010 and have previously released the likes of 'Pompeii'  and 'Things We Lost in the Fire', amongst their 13 singles and two studio albums, as well as extended plays.

Craig David is an English singer, songwriter, who rose to fame back in 1999, when he featured on Artful Dodger's hit single 'Re-wind'. He had some hits including 'Fill Me In' and Walking Away, was referenced quite a lot in the TV Show - Bo Selecta, and then seemingly vanished for a while.

He came back bigger (literally - he returned with a totally different, and buff new look) and better than ever with singles 'When the Bassline Drops' and 'Nothing Like This'. His latest collaboration being the best yet, in my humble opinion.

This is a beautifully slowed down tune, with the music and the vocals being quite atmospheric. The lyrics of the chorus "We're all stumbling through the night, it doesn't matter, we're all together, and there's paradise in our minds, falling together, arms round each other" are just beautiful.

This is one of those examples of all the pieces coming together to add up to greater sum than its parts. Its just beautiful, catchy and memorable. Brilliant stuff.

Let me know what you think of this week's single of the week, or go have a listen if you've not heard it before. For more of my singles of the week, live music and other music related stuff, why don't you check out My Music page here. Happy listening :)

Hoar Cross sneaky selfie

Whilst indulging ourselves at Hoar Cross Hall, I couldn't help to sneak a quick selfie. We were about to head out for dinner (3 courses) and had already indulged ourselves with some bubbly in the form of Prosecco. Feeling a bit more confident than usual, I decided to capture the moment. This is me! Nowhere near goal weight yet, but definitely making progress :)

My travels - Hoar Cross Hall

The grounds were amazing

we loved the leather sofas in the library

What not to do on Valentines Day....

It occurred to me this being the month of love as they say, that Valentines Day will soon be upon us. The first event of the year post New Year really, and its one of those times when romance is supposed to be all around. Hmm.

A very interesting discussion took place between my step daughter and the other half this week, consisting of what, if anything, he might be planning to get me this year, or do for me. The usual "oh it shouldn't be just one day" etc aside, everyone expects at least a card if they are in a relationship, and hopes for a surprise if they aren't! Just me? Surely not.

My other half has done pretty well in previous years - everything from flowers, a meal, wine, chocs to a night out, cinema and presents - gig tickets, T-shirt for a gig (ACDC last year). He's quite good.

However, in this discussion, he joked that he was going to get me an iron. My response was that if he was so dumb as to get me such a mundane purchase for a romantic occasion, he would find it inserted somewhere!!

This got me thinking about what you should absolutely not do on Valentines. Here is my list of the "don't do's" for your loved one this year (applies to male and female respectively):

  • Buy them an iron!! (bad)
  • Buy them an ironing board!! (even worse)
  • Forget altogether :(
  • Put the wrong name on the card
  • Spell fiance or fiancee wrong - get the male / female tense correct will you!
  • Put a ? then take offence if they don't realise its from you
  • Ask for an expensive item for yourself then go cheap in return
  • Complain about the cost of what you give
  • Mention previous loves in conversation over a romantic meal - just don't!
  • Talk with your mouth full - not romantic
  • Use the wrong cutlery if you are somewhere posh - do your homework first
  • Invite the kids to join you - if unavoidable, at least try to do something for the two of you
  • Buy underwear in the wrong size - offensive if too big or depressing if too small
If you avoid these common mistakes, you should have a wonderful Valentines Day - or if you are single, just enjoy not having to bother at all and eat chocolate, drink wine and be happy :)
