May is National Walking Month, amongst other things

To begin with, May is National Walking Month. So get those shoes on and get out there. Next up, its Skin Cancer Awareness Month - slap on some sunscreen. Its also National Asparagus Month - very healthy.

On a more scary note, its Zombie Awareness Month - so go binge on The Walking Dead, or maybe watch 28 Days Later or World War Z. Less scary, is Share a Story Month - dig out Enid Blyton and read with your little ones.

So there we have the National Month's for May.

I will never get the backside I want by sitting on it!!

I will never get the backside I want by sitting on it!! Wise words indeed. Can't recall where I read this, or words to this effect, but its stuck firmly in my head.

I do have a tendency to sit feeling sorry for myself because I can't get in those jeans, or I feel fat, or I feel out of condition. I hate looking at my backside in the mirror. However, it occurs to me on consideration, that sitting on my ample ass is perhaps not the way to accomplish that butt!!

You know what I'm talking about - the "motivation for squats" type derriere. The pert, firm, perfectly toned behind that is the envy of all - men and women. I do squats - occasionally, but that really isn't enough. I need to set myself a program and stick to it.

If I really do want to have the behind I want, I need to actually get off it!!

What I'm Watching this Week

  • Corrie. I am still in shock from the Aiden suicide - totally did not see that coming at all, which I suppose is actually the point - noone does as a rule. Shocking but thought provoking and desperately heart breathtakingly sad. Watching the fallout from his death has been difficult watching. Meanwhile, elsewhere Phelan's spectre still lingers - sure we've not seen the last of that dastardly villain. Then there is the whole David Platt storyline - dark times.

  • Bates Motel. Currently up to Season 3 and lets just say you might want to reconsider getting involved with this family - quite the death toll so far! Norman - played by the very brilliant Freddie Highmore (Spiderwick Chronicles) and his mother Norma - played by the wonder that is Vera Farmiga, have the most peculiar relationship. Unlike the film, she's still alive thus far - whether that remains the case I can only guess. Norman is clearly very disturbed, but then, so is his mother! Add in some incest, murder, and all manner of corrupt, blackmailing sub plots and this is a twisty turny story, which cleverly links to the original film, but brings it to modern times. Don't watch this if you're alone on a dark night!

  • Love Island. In readiness for the upcoming new series, we are watching series 1 of the reboot from a couple of years back. It makes me laugh how much tension and drama there can be over relationships that are at their longest, a couple of days old, if not hours! So much swapping around, being pied (!?) had to look that one up, fallings out and betrayal it is simply compelling viewing. Not quite as good as its sequel - I mean last years series blew up - remember Amber and Kem, Chris and Olivia, Camilla et al. Still a fun watch when you want something you don't have to think too much about. Entertaining all round.

  • Billions. Second time watch but better than the first time as I already know its brilliant this time, and can concentrate on the detail - as this show is sure full of them. Having no clue how the stock market works, talk of shorts, longs, and all manner of trading talk had me entirely bamboozled first time around. Whilst it still isn't wholly clear to me, its making much more sense now at least!! The acting is superb - Damian Lewis - that man is a talent. The whole cast are slick, talented and ooze charisma, and they seem genuine in that you really do have an emotional response. Best scene ever - Axlerod and Dollar Bill pretending to fight, followed closely by Ax going after the guy who drunk drove his kids - "Worth It!". Absolutely TV brilliance. Roll on series 3!

Stephen King - how great books don't always make great movies, but sometimes they come back...

Saturday night at the movies

Who cares what picture we see? Well me actually, especially when it comes to the King. Stephen King I am referring to. I doubt many would argue that he is the master of his genre in horror when it comes to books. He writes like true God of all things scary - from killer dogs, to telekinesis, to the most scary of clowns, he rocks the written scare fest.

Not only does he scare the pants off us, he also writes a great story that whilst it may have an element of supernatural sometimes, it doesn't always. So yes, he is the king of the book.

But how does that relate to the big screen? You would think, given his talent, his eye for the detail, his essence of story telling, his ability to transport us to his plane, that the translation to film would be a given. But there you would be wrong.

To begin with, here are my Top 10 Stephen King books:
  • Salem's Lot
  • Needful Things
  • The Dark Half
  • Gerald's Game
  • IT
  • Misery
  • The Shining
  • Insomnia
  • Under the Dome
  • Bag of Bones
Some of these have become good films, don't get me wrong, but some of his best film adaptations actually were short stories, barely even memorable! Some of his best books made truly awful films.

Here are my Top 10 great King film adaptations:
  • The Green Mile
  • Shawshank Redemption
  • The Shining
  • IT
  • Stand By Me
  • The Mist
  • Misery
  • Pet Sematary
  • Salem's Lot
  • Carrie
The problem with coming up with a top 10 list is that I always struggle when there is so much choice! On another day, my list might have included different choices. So for argument's sake, here are the ones I considered for my Top 10 Stephen King books, which are still amazing, and well worth a read and then some - King by name, King by definition in my humble.
  • Doctor Sleep
  • The Regulators
  • Rose Madder
  • Dreamcatcher
  • Mr Mercedes
  • The Stand
  • Cell
  • Christine
  • Pet Sematary
  • Lisey's Story
Some of his books have made great made for TV films or short movies too. Actually, I think some of these have turned out better than the book, and benefited from not being big budget. Some were better on TV.

Here is my round up of the rest of the best of his movie and TV outputs:
  • Thinner
  • Apt Pupil
  • Christine
  • Cujo
  • Needful Things
  • The Dark Half
  • Big Driver
  • Riding the Bullet
  • A Good Marriage
  • Storm of the Century
And now, for the inevitable list of the not so good verging on downright terrible King adaptations:
  • The Stand
  • Under the Dome
  • The Tommyknockers
  • Dreamcatcher
  • The Mangler
  • Hearts in Atlantis
  • Delores Claiborne
  • Sleepwalkers
  • The Lawnmower Man
  • Cell

My idea of a perfect menu

I like food, but I would not describe myself as a "foodie" as such, on account of being quite picky about things.  I often find myself going out for meals and having a limited choice on the menu given that some places don't cater for us not quite veggie but a little wary of meat eater types - I actually don't think we have a category - awkward maybe??

You go to the traditional pub menu and your choices tend to be lasagne, chilli, or chicken breast or burgers. For the more up market venues, you do get gourmet burgers, chicken skewers or mexican food like fajitas. I don't always want a veggie option, but what I cannot cope with is steaks, and meat on the bone or anything I have to fight with - fish with bones in, or crab, lobster etc...

My ideal menu would probably be Italian overall - lots of choices for me - gnocchi, pizza, pasta, bruschetta - mmmm. Mexican is also good, as is curry and balti. Chinese - again, lots of choices. Its when you go to a "non country" type restaurant that I struggle, and I like to go to somewhere more varied. Much as I love Italian, Indian, and Chinese, I would prefer to mix and match.

With this in mind, I have come up my ideal menu, should I ever have the choice to create it!

My perfect menu:

Starters:

  • Potato skins
  • Nacho's
  • Crispy aromatic duck and pancakes
  • Onion bhaji
  • Poppadom and choice of dips
  • Pate and toast
  • Garlic mushrooms
  • Bread board with oils and vinegars
  • Staffordshire oatcakes with choice of fillings
Mains:
  • Chicken Tikka Massala
  • Gourmet burger with stilton
  • Chilli Burrito
  • Red Thai Curry
  • Gnocchi with three cheese
  • Cajun Chicken breast
  • Sizzly chicken skewers
  • Lemon chicken
  • Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Mushroom stroganoff
  • Sausages and mash with gravy
  • Sweet and Sour Chicken
  • Chilli con carne

  • Cheese board
  • Hot chocolate fudge cake
  • White chocolate cheesecake
  • Chocolate sundae
