Weekly Motivation - Control what you can control

In life, there are things you can control and there are things that you cannot control. I have come to the conclusion, that when it comes to my life, I'm only going to concern myself with the things I can control.

I can control what I eat, what I drink, how much sleep I get and how much I exercise. If I want to succeed and get to my goal weight, as well as being healthy and in as good a shape as I can be, then I need to exercise self discipline and control the things I can control.

That means as well as eating the right things, it means choosing to control the portion sizes, what goes on my plate and in my mouth, the time I eat it and where I eat it. I don't need to be concerned with what everyone around me is going - I can't control their choices, only mine. I can make the right choices, because its within my control.

It means choosing to go to the gym, or go for a run, instead of choosing to lie in bed or make excuses not to go. Its something I can control. No-one can make me go, no-one can stop me from going - its my choice. I can measure my food and drinks, and be honest with myself.

I can't control the weather, or if my car breaks down, but it doesn't have to mean I give up. I can control what I can control and I am going to believe me. If my other half doesn't want to get up and come with me - guess what - its his choice. I am not going to be influenced any longer by the things I can't control.

I can control the housework, the things I do with my time, the places I go, the things I say and how I treat others. Those things are up to me. I can't control the news, or what is happening in the world. I can't control illness, or disasters, or accidents. I can't control what other people do or say, or how they might feel or not feel.

When it comes to my life, I can control who I spend my time with, I can choose what I wear, I can control how I treat myself. I can control the products I use, the holidays I take, the way I drive my car, the way I present myself. Sure I can work on the things I am not good at, and get better at the things I enjoy, those things I can control. I can't control how much things cost, I can't change my height, or my easily burnt skin. But I can control what I spend, on what, and how much I take care of myself.

If I can't control it, then I'm not going to worry about it any more. I am going to control what I can control and spend my time focused on the things that matter to me. I am going to choose that skinny latte, and that low cal ricecake - I can control that. That is my motivation for this week.

My Single of the Week - Selena Gomez - Back to You

My new Single of the Week is from the very lovely Selena Gomez with her new single 'Back to You'.

As I'm sure most people are aware, Selena Gomez is an American singer, yes, she that used to date The Bieber, but lets not hold that against her. At just 25 years old, Selena has the sort of international fame that means she literally is recognised everywhere, whether for her looks or her voice.

Selena is actually from Texas, and got one of her first breaks appearing on the Disney Channel in the show that made Miley Cyrus famous - Hannah Montana. She released her first solo music in 2012, and has also continued with her acting work.

Back to the single - its actually from a soundtrack to a program called 13 Reasons Why. Its a really catchy song, and her breathy delicate vocals suit the melody and the lyrics perfectly. Its pop but funky, dancy but more acoustic, a little bit country, a little bit street. Its just lovely, but it also makes you feel something - thats the magic of a great song.

The video to the song is interesting too - Selena sings the lyrics over images of her and a bad boy getting up to all sorts of mischief - not least stealing a car! Shocking. But its all in lovely retro colours, and Selena herself looks vintage and pretty. Its striking, and its funky.

The lines 'I wanna hold you when I'm not supposed to, when i'm lying close to someone else, you're stuck in my head and I can't get you out of it, If I could do it all again, I know I'd go back to you' are all sung, pretty much without pause, all running in a long lyrical sentence that falls and rises in such an appealing entrancing way. I had the lines running through my head for hours after hearing the song just once - its that catchy.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of The Disney "output" as often, the songs tend to be similar in style, and her previous songs, whilst I haven't hated them, I haven't really felt much for either way. This one though, somehow sounds more sensual, more mature and to my liking, suits her vocally much better. I do have the utmost respect for Selena on a personal level, as she has faced her battles for someone so young. With this song, she has a new fan musically too.

If you've not heard this one yet, go check it out and let me know what you think. I love it, I hope you will too. If you have a craving for more music stuff, you can find all my previous choices and more over at My Music page - just click here. :)

What I'm Watching this Week

  • Corrie. OMG. I knew Eva's secret would likely come out eventually, but flippin heck that was one hell of a shock. Such a tragic storyline. Corrie as ever, just brilliant. So many inter-connecting stories happening - awful Alya taking over the factory, Johnny and Liz and Jenny love triangle. My money is on Carla and Peter reconciling somehow. Great stuff on the cobbles this week.

  • Love Island. Current series and back catalogue of boxsets. Current series first - now lets first discuss Adam. What an awful human being - first he hurts Kendall for Rosie, now he's hurt Rosie for the next new girl. Said new girl looks a bit like Kelly Brook, but that is no excuse. Rosie, quite understandably, asks Adam for a word, and he goes in on her telling her not to nod at him - I mean is this guy actually for real? Rosie proceeds to get upset, again, understandably, whist Adam literally could not care less, and looks smug as you like. Then there is Eeyal - lordy that boy is just a snakey snake, and as spiritual as my trainers. What a bunch. The old boxsets are equally bonkers - quality!

  • Emmerdale. The whole Lachlan the serial killer story is just so intense - he really needs to get his come uppance - poor Doug copping the blame. As soap couples go, Chaz and Paddy are just the best so its so distressing to watch the sad story of their poor tragic baby unfold. Heartbreaking stuff. Meanwhile Debbie and Joe Tate continue their relationship in spite of everyone being against it. Tense stuff this week.

I'm Not Losing Weight - I Know Exactly Where its Gone

I have always aimed to lose weight. That has been a long term goal of mine for as long as I can actually remember. But then I got thinking - am I losing weight? Did I suddenly forget where I put it? Or wonder where it was hiding? Its a ridiculous term when you think about it really.

I haven't mislaid it - every pound I have lost, I have worked for. I have burned it, I have melted it to oblivion, its been obliterated - it is no more! I know exactly where it has gone - its gone, in the same way as the diesel in my car is gone after a long drive.

I've realised that the saying I have lost weight, or that I am losing weight, has quite a lot of negative connotations, so I am reframing my thinking on this issue. I shall no longer say I want to lose weight, but saying that kind of implies I might someday "find" that lost weight again. That's what happens to things you lose - sometimes you find them and I have absolutely no intention of finding these pounds again, not ever!

From this point forward, I am going to say that I want to get rid of the fat, the pounds, the weight. I want to reach goal weight by getting rid of the extra weight I am carrying - there shall be no more talk of losing weight. I am not losing weight, I am slimming down, I am becoming, each day, a better version of me, for me.

I shall say I want to reward my body by exercising it, instead of treating exercise as a punishment. My body may not be what I want it to be but whose fault is that ? Mine of course. But punishment doesn't work for me - rewards do. I need to reconsider the way I view my exercise, and see it as a treat, a challenge, a positive thing.

I may not be the slimmest, the fastest, the strongest, but I am there, giving it my all and that is all I can ask. The only bad workout is the ones I miss. I'm tired of starting again, so this time, I am not going to give up.

Not Feeling Motivated - Lost my Mojo somewhere.....

I have lost a considerable amount of weight since embarking on my latest get fit, get healthy, lose weight attempt. I have lost over 2 and a half stone, to be exact. On Saturday, I felt like I was getting somewhere, I felt slimmer, flatter, trimmer. Fast forward to today and suddenly I feel immensely tired, bloated, overweight and uncomfortable.

I go to bootcamp on Sunday morning, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which in this heat has been even more intense. As well as that, I have been going to the gym 2-3 times per week, making 5-6 workouts all together. Plus doing ab work and resistance at home, and loads of walking.

So what is going on? Its so hard to stay motivated, to keep going, but what is the alternative? Frankly and simply put - there is none. If I give up, I go right back to the start. If I keep going - there is a chance I will get my mojo back, and feel like its working again.

Right now, I'm having this sort of internal argument with myself that goes something like this - "I don't want to exercise - I have to exercise". " I want to eat crisps - no I am not eating crisps". "Its not fair" - "I need to work harder". On it goes.

Why do some weeks just seem more challenging than others? Why do some weeks feel like I'm gaining weight instead of losing it? So frustrating, but I know I'm not alone in this battle. I just need to work out how to ride it out until my will power puts in an appearance again!!

I want one of these - just me all over!

I find myself keeping receipts. I have no idea what for. Yes, occasionally, you might want to keep a receipt for a large purchase, or an electrical item for the warranty.

But for petrol? For a bar of chocolate or your lunchtime sandwich?

Yes, I have this issue so I need to also have this tin!!

Ad break exercise - genius!!

Struggling to find time to fit in your fitness sessions? No time for the gym? Well that is absolutely no excuse!

I set myself a mini goal for each day - 10,000 steps. On days when I do have the time, I go to the gym and I got for walks, especially now spring is here and the nights are getting lighter and warmer.

It's the days when I don't go to the gym, and when I don't get chance to walk that are the issue. How do I get that elusive exercise in with a busy life?

I came up with Ad Break Exercises. Rather than spending ages jogging on the spot, or doing DVD workouts, which are all very well and good, but can get predictable and boring pretty quick, I decided to do short bursts.

Now, depending on the channel you are watching this is easier on some than others. Take ITV as example. Adverts right? Perfect. Every ad break, get your bum off the sofa and do something.

Abs, tricep dips, lunges, squats - whatever you like. Keep it going just for the length of the adverts. Not too much hard work is it? Nope. You can do every break, or just a couple - its really up to you.

However, just increasing your activity in the evenings like this will make such a difference over the course of the week. It could add up to an hour per week if you do 3-4 ad breaks each night. Ad breaks being 2-3 mins long per.

If you really go for it, it could be the difference between gaining and maintaining your weight. Better still, if you do this on your non exercise days plus keep to your healthy eating, you should rev up your metabolism and see some losses on those scales.

If you, like me, have to really push yourself to make you get up and work out, then this could be the one for you. Its short bursts, so you don't need special kit, or equipment. Your own body is all you need. So what are waiting for? :)

Alcohol makes me want to eat this!!

Its a well known fact that when you have a glass or two of your tipple of choice (wine in my case) that the next day you will feel hungry and its never a salad you crave now is it!!

I didn't have a lot - a few glasses, so no hangover as such to report. No bad head etc.. but by gosh I am hungry! Have been all day. What I want to eat, what would really hit the spot would be this:

I am proper craving stodge. Cheese and onion pasty, chips, or a chilli con carne or lasagne. Or just a lovely fry up like this one. Why does it happen? Its always fatty stodgy salty stuff for me. I can't actually have any of course - its going to be hard enough trying to get the weight loss target this week as it is, but you tell my stomach that!!

I want to Skinny Dip (amongst other things! ) :)

Well, you only live once....

Next Holiday Destination???

We decided to book in advance for once for next year's hols. Usually, we book between 3 & 6 months ahead, but we thought we would get organised. Well, that was the plan anyway.

Cue 2 months or so of us browsing holiday destinations and we are still nowhere even close to decided. It's starting to become annoying now.

I love a beach holiday, but my other half only likes beach holidays. Whereas I would like to alternate. One beach hol, one exploring hol not necessarily somewhere hot. There is a huge world out there.

So we almost agreed that we would go to America - New England, just the two of us. Then enter G into the equation. She wants to go to the USA too. Now, New England is Stephen King land, and I wanted to go in the fall when the trees are in their autumn colours. This is not a hol for a 12 year old.

Then we started to consider Orlando. This would be with G. The first hurdle was the time away issue. As in you need two weeks not one. That was resolved quicker and easier than expected.

There is a lot to do there so we looked at a twin break. Disney, Universal, Florida, Miami, Seaworld - crikey! But then there are other places in the USA that I want to go. Namely Washington, New York, Chicago to name but a few.

Not to mention the Caribbean and Hawaii! So that got us onto cruises. We also want to go on a cruise. I want to go to the Caribbean. The Med is the destination of choice for my other half.

But we also want to go to Greece. An all inclusive yes, but also an island hopping trip. Some just me and him, some the family. Depends when and where as to which is which.

But then again we love the Canaries. We have been to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura together, and I have been to Lanzarote before, and I love them.

So where do we go? Do we do the Med? If so, do we do all inclusive, island hopping or a cruise?

Or do we go longhaul to the USA? Do we go to touristy Orlando or off the beaten track South America?

There is so much world out there to see, its hard to pin it down. More research me thinks. Back to the drawing board!!

What would you do??

What would you do if you won the lottery? I'm talking a big win here, like £1m. A life changing amount? I think most people have a vague notion of what they might do. We are all different, and I suppose it depends on your own time of life, status and aspirations.

For me, it would be property. I would do the usual stuff - new car, home improvements, a holiday. I would look after the people that matter to me.

I certainly would not broadcast it to the masses. All manner of folks I'd not seen in years would no doubt come out of the woodwork!! Again, it would be those that mattered, and even then, quite possibly, I wouldn't actually tell people.

You can imagine it can't you? "I've won the lotto" would prompt everyone to speculate over how much. If I said "I've won a million, people might expect a certain £ share of it. Now, depending on how many in the family and friends network, that could cause some issues. So no, I wouldn't give away the details.

What I would do, is buy some properties. A flat in Manchester and a flat in London as bolt holes when we go to gigs, shopping etc.. That way, everyone benefits, and it could earn a crust whilst its not in use.

What next? A property in the canaries is a must for me. Winter sun - no place better or closer. I would love to spend winter in the Canaries, and back to blighty for what passes as summer here!!

I'm thinking a little gites in the south of france would be amazing too. On top of this, I would have a Personal Trainer every day, a dietitian to sort my meals and help me to get the weight off, and also every beauty treatment suitable to make me look the best I can, including some laser treatment!!

So that would be my plan, dependent on how much and when it might happen.

So what would you do?  :)
