Tired, achy and content

I'm tired this evening. Dog and bone tired. I ache from the gym. My thighs, my arms - you name it, I can feel it. In a funny sort of way though, I feel contented.

Sometimes physical labours exhaust in a way that is fulfilling somehow. Like you have earned your sleep. My job and hobbies usually exhaust my mind.

I feel like I am sleepwalking my way through life sometimes, because when the adrenalin wears off, its like you can't think anymore. Then, I feel tired but sleep is a long way off. Mental exhaustion doesn't allow you to rest, to sleep or to relax.

Tonight, whilst my head has been just as busy as usual, the rest of me is its equal. I shall sleep well tonight. :)

Its the end of the month and you know what that means!!!

30th June  -  otherwise known as month end!! You know what that means don't you?

Yes its month end comping madness!! So many competitions end on the last day of the month so its a crazy marathon every time.

I shall share some of the lovely ones with you so give it a go!!

You've got to be in to win it, just be sure to let me know if you strike it lucky!! :)

Good luck. x

The inspiration to be slim :)

I have been slimmish before now. Never quite reached goal, but these are the pics of me when I have been more on the slim side:

Tunisia August 2014

May 2014 - Gran Canaria

Menorca 2013

Menorca 2013

I want to get to goal this year, I really do. Its pics like these that make me determined to get slim again, and reach goal. I want to be able to wear lovely clothes at home, not just manage my weight for a week on holiday!!

Body Envy - I confess

I am on a diet. No, more than that. I am on a fitness kick. Gym, PT, healthy eating, off the alcohol Mon - Fri, and starting this week, Sundays too.

I have a goal weight, but also a goal image. I have this notion of what my body could look like at its best. I have a way to go to shift the weight, and even further to achieve he the definition I want.

However, I'm finding something is happening. I usually focus on my efforts - calories, inches, stones and pounds, how many times to go the gym, how much can I lose each week.

Now though, I'm becoming fascinated by those around me, on the TV, magazines etc.. Not in a negative way. No. More of a - that's the sort of thing I want to wear - the white bikini as seen on Tulisa.

It goes further than that though. I'm noticing things I've not noticed before. I am watching Madonna for instance in the Beautiful Stranger video and became focused on how toned her arms were. I am watching for muscle tone, and wondering how they achieve that.

Its like my head, at age 40, has finally cottoned on to the fact that everyone else has to work at it too. They aren't usually born like that, they have to work at it. I'm realising I have body envy, but not of their bodies, envy of the fact they've realised it sooner!!! Its spurring me on and I am feeling motivated :)

Who shall I spend my next week with?

Well, after some time, I finally finished My Week with Morrissey. It was interesting, but gosh, not the cheeriest of artists out there!!

So now I find myself pondering who to choose next. Along the way, I have already chosen the Foo Fighters, INXS, Pink and Amy Winehouse. There's been Arctic Monkeys, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Goldfrapp.

I've listened to Coldplay, Kate Bush, Blondie and Britney; Madonna, Kings of Leon, Oasis and REM. Rihanna, Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones and Calvin Harris. I've chosen Kylie, Paloma, Robbie Williams and Stereophonics; Take That, Kaiser Chiefs and The Killers.

So who do I pick next? At this point, I am considering Adele, Katy Perry or maybe U2. Possibly The Spice Girls or Girls Aloud. Or I might go rock and think ACDC or Guns and Roses. I might go indie and choose Green Day or go classic old school with a bit of The Who or The Beatles.

So many choices, I shall mull it over a little longer. :)

Stuffed on salad - who knew?

Today is my "non 3 day diet day". In the last ditch attempt to shift a few more pounds, I am doing 3 days on, 2 days off from now until hols 4 weeks today. Today, as stated, is non 3 day, which means I can eat normally.

Normally though, in this context, is still very low cal as no point doing the 3 day diet then stuffing my face! So today I have had a very low calorie day indeed, culminating in salad this evening.

When I say salad, I mean a big salad. 3 quorn fillets - 42 cals each, very low fat on a bed of leafy salad, red onion, beetroot, some cottage cheese and a sprinkling of nuts. Added to this, the quorn I laced with garlic, chilli and mild curry so it was a spicy salad.

I have finished it, and I am stuffed!! I can't believe a salad has filled me up so much! Maybe my stomach is getting used to smaller portions or something.

Regardless of the reason, I am stuffed on salad. Who knew you could be full after a healthy salad? This is progress. Will try this again as it was really tasty. :)

Today's Reason to Stick to my Diet is how wonderful it feels to lose weight

Today's reason to stick to my diet is how wonderful it feels to lose weight. When you get on the scales, and it has dropped, its a good feeling.

When the pounds start to add up and become half stones it feels great. When you start to drop whole stones and look and feel better, its the best feeling ever.

I need to keep that in mind, as the reverse is also true. When you get on those scales and its gone up, it feels awful.

So, I need to remember how bad it feels when the scales go up and how wonderful it feels when my weight is coming down.

A Look Back at My Week With The Kaiser Chiefs as we go to see them on Sunday!!

So for my 25th choice it was The Kaiser Chiefs. I chose 7 songs, one per day (a week in total) and reviewed each one by one. I learned more about the band, where they came from, and enjoyed listening to their back catalogue.

Now its all over so all that remains to be done is to decide which order my 7 choices are in terms of my favourite. Without further ado then:

Number 1: Coming Home
Number 2: Love's Not a Competition
Number 3: Everyday I Love You Less and Less
Number 4: Little Shocks
Number 5: I Predict A Riot
Number 6: Ruby
Number 7: Never Miss a Beat

Right then. My week with The Kaiser Chiefs is at the end. Its been fabulous. Now I just need to decide who next. Decisions decisions.

If you can't wait, then check out all 25 my week choices, along with loads more over at My Music page - just click here :)

Today's reason for sticking to the diet is that I want to be in control

Today's reason for sticking to the diet is that I want to be in control and not my body. My mind needs to rule, not my hunger or cravings.

This is the problem - I get the strongest desire to eat crap and drink wine. Or a lovely cold beer and a burger, or crisps, or cheese or cake. Its never good stuff. I give in and then I enjoy it for a few minutes, and then within minutes, I am feeling fat and horrible, and the impact lasts for days.

I am tired of being ruled by cravings for fatty foods and I want to be in control. The longer I stick to the plan, the more I form new habits to replace the unhealthy ones and the better I feel mentally because then I am in the driving seat and in control.

So there is today's reason.

Weigh in goal for Sunday 3rd July

Here is the plan to lose 2lb between now and Sunday:
  • Tues - low cal normal eating day. 10,000 steps, 265 abs, 80 squats

  • Thurs - Day 1 - 3 day diet, 10,500 steps. 275 abs, 90 squats.
  • Fri - Day 2 - 3 day diet, 10,500 steps. 280 abs, 95 squats
  • Sat - Day 3 - 3 day diet. 10,500 steps. 285 abs, 100 squats.

A Beauty-full summer!

I have decided that this summer, I am going to make the most of myself.

Getting older, as a woman, is certainly not an easy thing to accept, at least not for me. I have not been blessed with the sort of genes that appear to defy ageing, sadly. Nor have I lived a life of virtue and healthy living. This body has been enjoyed let me tell you. Never more so that of late, and the toll is showing its price!

I have expanded somewhat from last month when I went on holiday, to now in a haze of post holiday over indulgence, which lingered longer than it should have!!  Last week, I began to undo some of the self inflicted damage, but not content with that, I intend to go further this time.

I intend to take stock of my life and habits and replace some of the less kind to my body ones with some more positive actions.

Last time I lost a significant amount of weight, I was disappointed that I also lost inches from my chest. A side effect of that was diminished firmness in my decolletage area, so I have invested in some Clarins Bust Beauty Extra Lift Gel. I hope it works!

I am going to knock the booze on the head for a bit, detox, eat healthy, and get my backside moving again. This is it now - life begins here.

What I'm Watching this Week

  • Game of Thrones. Bang up to date now and it just keeps getting better!! Its one of those programs where just because there is a famous actor in an episode, it doesn't mean a thing. They are no more safe from being killed off in the series than anyone else!! I really do not like Cersai - she is just so horrible. Loving Arya Stark though - what a talented young actress she is. I am missing half man a bit this series though - not enough of him and his wit. Great stuff though. Long may it continue.

  • Billions. I have now finished series 1. No more on boxset yet, alas. It ended on a real plot twist - I won't give it away - that wouldn't be fair. If you haven't watched this yet, the last episode is a real shocker!! I am absolutely in awe of Damian Lewis - he is the best actor of the moment. He's not even American, he's English, but he is so convincing!! Drama, sex, S&M, sabotage, backstabbing and betrayals, love and loyalty and money, lets not forget money. Wow.

  • Big Brother. Getting quite into this series, but I do have to say it gets right on my nerves when they are allowed to walk off set and then back on. I mean the whole point is that they are isolated from the real world. Not if they can just stroll in and out when they want they aren't!!! Other than that, its quite a fascinating watch this time around.

What's Happening This week in the World?

Here are the big headlines for this week:
  • Euro 2016. Big games coming up tonight for England !! At one point, it looked like England would face Portugal next. Thank goodness that's not happening but still got to get past Iceland!!

  • Referendum on 23rd June. It was the big vote day. Stay in or Brexit? Brexit won. Times they are a changing!! The country seems to be turning on itself. That's got to stop - we are where we are now.

  • Glastonbury. Its that time of year - usually the week when it decides to rain and turn Glasto into a river of mud!! This year, the rain caused havoc with the traffic at gridlock as festival goer's head to the site but from all accounts, its was great as always.

Top 10 Cheese Spread

  • Philadelphia - full fat original
  • Laughing Cow
  • Primula
  • Dairylea
  • Applewood spreadable
  • Seriously Strong Cheddar spreadable
  • Philadelphia - Light Chives
  • Boursin - Pepper
  • Philadelphia - Garlic and Herb
  • Boursin Garlic and Herb
I would have put Sunpat cheese spread, but alas its no more :(

My Week with Morrissey is over

So my week with Morrissey is over. 7 songs, 7 days and now all that remains to be done is to decide which of my choices is in the top spot!

Without further ado then:

In at number 1 it is : This Charming Man
Number 2: How Soon is Now
Number 3: The Boy With the Thorn in his Side
Number 4: Piccadilly Palare
Number 5: Panic
Number 6: Suedehead
Number 7: Shoplifters of the World Unite

My week is over. Its taken a long time this one from when I chose Morrissey and whilst the music has been great, its not the cheeriest!! For more of my week's with and loads more head over to My Music page here.

Now I just need to decide who to choose next. Happy listening :)

My Week with Morrissey Day 7 - The Boy With the Thorn in his Side

For my final day of my week with Morrissey I am finishing on the classic 'The Boy With the Thorn in his Side'.

'The Boy With the Thorn in his Side' was released in 1985. It was from The Smiths third album The Queen is Dead which was released the following year in 1986.

This song is probably the most lovely to listen to of all my choices this week. Morrissey has such beautiful vocals on this one. Once again, this song is all guitars and vocals and a distinctive tune and riff.

The Smiths, and then Morrissey as a solo artist, can be guaranteed to produce songs that really do stand the test of time. This song is still beautiful.

The words just stick in your head "How can they look into my eyes; And still they don't believe me" then "And if they don't believe me now; Will they ever believe me?". You find yourself walking around singing those lines over and over again.

'The Boy with the Thorn in his Side' reached number 23 in the UK singles charts. This song I think was intended to be a bit of a dig at the mainstream scene who were often reluctant to play The Smiths songs.

So there we have it, my last choice of My Week with Morrissey. All that remains to do now is to decide which of my 7 songs are in the number 1 spot. More on that to follow.

If you love music and want more, then head over to My Music page here. Happy listening :)

Today's reason to diet and exercise - toned back

I have always wanted a toned, firm and sexy back. You know - you see those women in backless dresses or bikini's with no love handles or back fat or bra bulges!!

I want that and there is only one way of accomplishing it. I must lose the fat, get to goal weight and exercise like a maniac!!!

So that is today's reason :)

This week's weigh in goal - Tuesday 28th weigh in

My goal weight loss for Tuesday 28th June, 4 weeks to go, is 4lbs. That is ambitious I grant you, but never the less, it has to be done!!

Here is how I am going to try between now and then:
  • Sat - Day 1 - 3 day diet, 10,000 steps, 250 abs, 65 squats
  • Sun - Day 2 - 3 day diet. 10,000 steps, 255 abs, 70 squats
  • Mon - Day 3 - 3 day diet. 10,000 steps, 260 abs, 75 squats
Tuesday I shall weigh in and see how I did. After the 3 day diet, I am really hoping to have smashed it.

Today, I shall make sure to hit my squats and abs targets, and somehow also hit my 10,000 steps!!

I am nothing if not a trier :)

Today's reason to stick to my diet - I want to see my cheekbones again!!

Today's reason to stick to my diet and exercise plan is that I want to see my cheekbones again. I am very lucky to possess good bone structure - I have been told many times.

Many times that is, when you can actually see them, unlike now!! My face is the first place weight seems to go from when I lose it. Unfortunately, its also the first place that it goes back on, which is what I am rocking or sadly not, at the moment.

So, today's reason is to rediscover them bones them bones them dry bones. Cheekbones that it is :)

My new Retro Single of the Week - The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

My new retro single of the week is the wonderful 'Sweet Disposition' from  The Temper Trap.

This was released as a single in 2008. It was quite a hit here in the UK, reaching number 6 in the UK singles chart.

What I didn't know, until I chose this as my retro single of the week, is that the band is called The Temper Trap, whereas I didn't know it was "The". Secondly, I had no idea that they were Australian!!

The Temper Trap formed in 2005 as a rock band. In 2008 they moved over to the UK and released their album, 'Conditions' which was their debut in 2009, from which 'Sweet Disposition'  was lead single.

For me, this is the perfect song. The vocals from lead singer Dougy Mandagi are absolutely beautiful. The notes he hits send shivers down your spine its so good.

But this song is not just about the vocals. The music, the speed and the instruments all combine in the most breathtaking way. This is an absolute gem, and has become something of an anthem. Its one of those songs that we always end up playing at the end of the night when we have a get together.

So far as I know, The Temper Trap have continued to produce music and records, but none have ever equaled this in my humble opinion.

This song is all about soaring vocals, going from soft to loud, from emotional to powerful, to the the drums, guitars and keyboard that add such drama and such feeling to this track. The words add such a heightened sensation to this song "won't stop til it's over, won't stop to surrender". Wow.

If this is a new song to you, then you are really missing out and you need to have this music in your life. Go take a listen, and let me know what you think, or if you already know it just listen to it anyway and enjoy.

Today's reason to stick to my diet - I am sick of being hot and uncomfortable!

When I am overweight in the summer when its warm, it makes me feel even more hot and uncomfortable. I lose weight to go on holiday abroad, and it feels so good being able to wear bikini's, shorts and skirts.

Unfortunately, when I get home to the UK, I gain weight and then when it gets warm here, I am not able to wear my summer clothes. This is ridiculous. So I am changing the pattern this year and I am going to be slim for the summer here for once!!!

That is today's reason. I want to be cool, and look cool, not hot and uncomfortable!!!

My Week with Morrissey Day 6 - This Charming Man

Day 6 of my week with Morrissey and today its 'This Charming Man'.

'This Charming Man' was released by The Smiths in 1983. It was the second single they released.

For me, aside from the fabulous guitar in this - lots of complicated sequences which make this track instantly recognisable, are the wonderful lyrics. Its like the stuff of classic poetry.

Lines such as "on a hillside desolate", and "Why pamper life's complexities" demonstrate a beautiful usage of the English language, not representative of where The Smiths band members came from. Its like the language of a bygone era.

Then there are the now infamous lines "I would go out tonight but I haven't got a stitch to wear; this man said It's gruesome that someone so handsome should care". Let me tell you, when I was young, I had no idea what this meant in reality, but we would often quote that line getting ready to go out!

Whatever Morrissey and the band were implying in this no doubt cleverly worded track, was lost on me back in the day. Now, it seems quite obvious that it was Morrissey was vocally protesting over the pop scene once again, protesting against how gay men in particular were being famed in a way he didn't associate with.

Morrissey was an altogether different kind of star. Swinging his gladioli, with his shirt open and necklaces in the video, he somehow managed to be ironic yet popular, flamboyant but morose all at the same time. His vocals, as ever, beautiful. The words clever, and educated.

I had forgotten how good this track was. Go take a listen, and let me know what you thought of it - be it new to you, or just an old familiar.

Single of the Week - This Girl - Kungs vs Cookin on 3 Burners

For my new single of the week, I have chosen 'This Girl' from Kungs vs Cookin on 3 Burners.

This is a real summer song. You can just imagine yourself dipping your toes in the pool, or paddling in the ocean whilst this song swirls around you taking you to a world of relaxation and palm trees. Sun, sand and cocktails. Yes ladies and gents, with this tune, summer has arrived.

Kungs is a French DJ, known for deep house. This track though, is much lighter, featuring what sound like trumpets, and is very uplifting and full of good vibes.

On this track, we also have Cookin on 3 Burners. They are an Australian street funk band and this was originally their song back in 2009.

The remix has kept the original vocals from Australian artist Kylie Auldist. It has however, added a more upbeat feel to it, adding more electronic beats and also brass. This is still though, full of soul and more than a nod in the blues direction.

The combination of an original blues song, updated and made bang on pulse has given us a real gem of a track. It really does get in your head and takes you some place good.

You may not have crossed paths with this fab song as yet so go take a listen. I challenge you not to imagine yourself on a beach as the breeze gently flutters your sarong!!

My Week with Morrissey Day 5 - Panic

Day 5 of my week with The Smiths and Morrissey and today its 'Panic'.

'Panic' was released as a single in 1986. It wasn't taken from any of their albums, although they had just released their third when this came out. It was a track they released as a single in its own right and it did well reaching number 11 in the UK singles chart.

Now, as ever, this song caused some controversy at the time. The lyrics were pretty to the point "Hang the DJ" and "burn down the disco" obviously being a little strong!! Morrissey was apparently not impressed with dance music and pop. He felt, as the lyrics say "it says nothing to me about my life".

In his own particular unique manner, Mozza had a pop at the mainstream scene with this track. Its very good though and in fact is my favourite Smiths tune. Morrissey's vocals are quite beautiful on this one. The boy could sing.

This is another song consisting largely of guitars. Its very effective, and the combination of the morose warblings of Morrissey and the brilliant skill of the Smith's guitarist - Marr, combine to make one of the all time great songs of the 80's.

If you haven't heard this before, go and take a listen, or just take a stroll down memory lane. For more music, singles of the week and loads more check out My Music page here. Happy listening :)

Newcastle once upon a Time! - remember this? G 2 years ago :)

Oh my word, they do say out of the mouths of babes. Well, I have just been helpless. Watching the National TV awards, Ant and Dec have just been awarded the lifetime achievement.

Clips of their shows came on, then their song - Let's Get Ready to Rumble (yes, ok, I admit I was one of those responsible for it reaching the top spot again!). Then there were various folks talking about the boys from Newcastle.

Now for those of you that do not know, there are in fact two Newcastles. We have just moved from Newcastle under Lyme, so you must forgive little G for the confusion.

She asked us if Ant and Dec were from our Newcastle, or Newcastle once upon a Time! Well, we fell about. No, we cried, they are from the other Newcastle, but its not Once upon a Time chick. Its Newcastle upon Tyne!!

    Oh dear... :)
