National Days for November - Today is World Kindness Day

  • 13th - World Kindness Day

It's November - bring on the Fireworks!!

I love November. Its one of my favourite months. The nights are long and dark, the days are generally short and bleak. Not sounding so appealing.

Ok, ok, November can be considered a non month really, once you get past the fun and games of Bonfire Night.

What I love is how its a pause. Everything seems to slow down. The madness of the Christmas month hasn't quite set in. Halloween is done and dusted.

The weather isn't fit for BBQ's and garden fetes. Its not a month I usually go on holiday in but this year we are which is just wonderful!! . Its a month to slow the pace, recharge, and go for lovely walks in the outdoors, then cosy up in a warm place.

Yes, November is right up there. Enjoy :)

Paranormal Activity

10 Scary Films for Halloween #10 - Paranormal Activity

10 scary films for Halloween number 10. Paranormal Activity.

Paranormal Activity was released in 2007. This is a film about the supernatural - not surprising from the title that fact really.

Its one of those now well known "found footage" style films, where its billed as if its true. What it was and still is as the original, is scary.

It focuses on a couple - Katie and Micah. Katie feels a presence in their house, and they set up some cameras. They have no idea what they are letting themselves in for.

At first, it starts slowly - the cameras just picking up a few things. Then things ramp up. Katie is seen standing staring at Micah at the side of the bed, footsteps are found that aren't theirs, It gets really scary then - she gets dragged upstairs, so they start to sleep downstairs.

Me? I would be out the door, never-mind sleeping downstairs. Micah finds bite marks on Katie's neck, and they try to get help to deal with it.

Finally, Katie becomes possessed. It ends where she is screaming in a weird voice, and the camera picks up Micah being thrown across the room.

It doesn't sound scary. Many of the sequels and imitations since haven't been. But this one, the first one, had me petrified.

There are no big stars in this, no huge budget, yet it delivers what a horror should - scares and fear. Perfect for Halloween.

10 Scary Films for Halloween #9 - Fright Night

10 scary films for Halloween number 9. Fright Night.

For my top 10, I am referring to the 2011 film, not the old one. That said, the old one is good fun, but this one? Well this one is scary. Its directed by Craig Gillespie and stars Colin Farrell as the vampire.

Its set in Las Vegas, and the main character is a teenager called Charley. He lives with his mum, played by Toni Collette. A new mysterious neighbour moves in, which is Mr Farrell - Jerry.

Charley's school friend, Ed, has this conspiracy theory about people going missing in their town. Ed tries to convince Charley that Jerry is a vampire! Charley thinks he is being ridiculous. Ed soon goes missing and unbeknownst to Charley, he is now a vampire too!!

Charley begins to realise Ed may have been right, and creeps into Jerry's place to investigate. He finds a girl captive there. He tries to rescue her, but once he gets her outside, the sunlight hits her and she turns to ash. Charley, terrified, tracks down Peter Vincent, famed vampire killer. Played by Brit ace David Tennant (Dr Who).

Peter doesn't think Charley is serious, and dismisses him. Back home, Jerry knows Charley came into his house and comes after them. He can't come inside, but he sets the house on fire instead, with Charley and his mum and girlfriend Amy inside. Amy is played by Imogen Poots - who is one of the stars in 28 weeks later.

They just manage to escape, and flee in their old banger of a car. Jerry though, is soon on their tale. He is really scary now, and though Colin Farrell is the sexiest vampire I have ever scene (sorry Edward off Twilight fans, its an age thing), he is also bloody scary!!

Charley's mum manages to slow Jerry down by impaling him with a For Sale sign, but not after he has killed a passing motorist!! He is in his real vampire guise, with the sign sticking out of him as they escape again.

His mum gets put in hospital, whilst he and Amy go back to try again with Peter Vincent. Ed shows up, in his new vampire guise, and they fight. Charley has no choice but to kill his old friend - either him or Ed. Amy though, gets bitten by Jerry and he takes her.

Peter finally agrees to help, and he and Charley hatch a plan. They head into the basement, where Jerry's vampire family come for them. The plan works, and Charley kills Jerry by driving a stake through his heart. The vampires turn back to their human form once he is dead including Amy.

This one is a different sort of scary - fun scary, but full of jumps and scares. As I said, Colin Farrell is the fittest, sexiest vampire of them all. Fabulous fun for Halloween. I love this film!

10 Scary Films for Halloween #8 - Psycho

10 scary films for Halloween number 8. Psycho.

Psycho was released in 1960, and is probably one of the most famous horror films out there. Its an Alfred Hitchcock movie, and it really has stood the test of time, being re-covered and referenced ever since. It is a classic.

This original version stars Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, who play the main leads - Norman Bates and Marian Crane. We meet Crane when she is having a rendezvous with her lover at a hotel. They discuss lack of money, and she returns to her humdrum office job.

A customer comes in to pay for a purchase, as she works in a property office. Crane takes the money to deposit it, but never gets to the bank. She instead, runs off with it. After a scare when she has taken a nap at the wheel, and is approached by the police, she goes to a car sales lot and changes her car.

She drives on, but when the weather gets bad, she pulls in when she sees the Neon sign for "The Bates Motel". Its so off the beaten track that she is the only guest, as she is told by none other than Norman Bates himself.

To be honest, Perkins is good looking and charming, and you could easily believe he is harmless. He isn't!! He insists they eat together, and they do. Its safe to say, this was their only meal together, as I am quite sure everyone is aware of "that shower scene" and the "screech screech screen" music to accompany the knife slashes!!

Marion's sister raises the alarm when they realise she is missing, and hires a detective to look for her. He finds the Bates hotel, but his finding is short lived as he is killed too.

Her lover and her sister, fearing the worst, head off themselves. Puzzled, when they speak to the local sheriff and discover Norman's mother is dead, as the detective had said he was going to speak to her.

They don't find Marion, but they do find his mother - who is of course, a corpse!! After trying to kill them to, Norman is arrested. It turns out that he takes on the persona of his mother, as he hadn't coped with her taking a lover as a boy and had murdered them as well!!

Its a brilliant film, with brilliant actors, and yes, the clothes, the cars etc.. do date it, but the plot and the shocks are just as fresh.

Another brilliant film for Halloween. You can find more over at My Film page - just click here.

10 Scary Films for Halloween #7 - Carrie

10 scary films for Halloween number 7. Carrie.

Carrie is a famous and classic horror film. It a Stephen King book adaptation, along with another of my favourite scary films - Salem's Lot.  I remember watching this for the first time, and though it's clearly an old film - 1976 can you believe, the scares still shock.

The portrayal by Sissy Spacek of a young girl - Carrie - growing up with no-one to tell her about life as a woman is so convincing. You feel the emotions with her, and its painful at times and despite knowing all is not going to end well you cant help rooting for a different outcome for her.

At 17, Carrie, is an isolated figure - no friends, no boyfriend and no life experience. When she experiences her first period (at 17??) she has no idea what is happening to her, as her obsessively religious mother has told her nothing of life. Walking from the showers, naked and terrified, the other girls taunt her by throwing tampons at her. As Carrie gets more upset, a light bulb explodes.

Her teacher tries to teach the girls the wrong they have done, by making them pay in exercise in PE. One of them though, Chris, is having none of it, and ends up being slapped by the teacher. She storms off, not caring that she can't go to prom as punishment. Chris persuades Sue to ask her boyfriend Tommy to ask Carrie to the prom. Carrie refuses at first, but after he seems so sincere, she accepts, despite her mother's forbidding.

Chris meanwhile, conspires with her boyfriend Billy to seek revenge. Billy (Travolta) slaughters a pig, and he and Chris hoist a bucketful above the stage. Carrie arrives, with Tommy, looking beautiful. Chris though, has rigged the prom king and queen vote, and they are named as the winners.

As they take the stage, Sue has sneaked in to make sure Carrie is ok, as she is actually the nice one. She notices a rope, leading from the booth where Chris is hiding. Unfortunately, the teacher sees Sue and mistakenly thinks she is there for no good reason, and escorts her out before she can warn Carrie.

Chris pulls the rope, drenching Carrie with blood. Its horrific. The bucket knocks out Tommy. Chris and Billy leave, laughing, as Carrie sees everyone laughing at her, just as her mother warned. She unleashes the full force of her rage.

She blocks the exits and turns the hose on the room, knocking them over, using her mind. A fire starts, and everyone inside is killed. Chris and Billy witnessing this, get in their car and try to escape. They see Carrie as she leaves and try to run her over. She flips their car, it explodes and they are killed.

Carrie gets home, and showers herself clean. She sobs to her mother, and briefly, her mother softens. Only briefly though, as she then talks of how Carrie was conceived, by rape, after her father got drunk. She stabs an unsuspecting Carrie. Her mother is mad. Carrie, scared, terrified, unleashes her rage once again and all the knives in the kitchen impale her mother like she has been crucified. The house begins to tremble, and falls upon both of them.

The ending is the biggest shock. Sue dreams that as the sole survivor of the prom, she is visiting the graves. As she does, a bloody hand shoots from the ground and grabs her, and she wakes up screaming.

This is a scary film, and despite it being 1970's when it was released, it is still scary. There have been loads of remakes, and re-tellings of this tale, but this original is still by far the stand-out of them all.

So there we have it, number 7 of My Films for Halloween. You can check out the others over at My Music page by clicking here.

10 Scary Films for Halloween #6 - The Blair Witch Project

10 scary films for Halloween number 6. The Blair Witch Project.

The Blaire Witch Project was released in 1999. It had a massive response back in the day, and was a huge hit. That's because it was proper, and unexpectedly, scary.

It was ground breaking then, but there have been loads of imitations since, so remember this was the original. Its the first time "found footage" documentary style filming became mainstream, as far as I'm aware anyway.

So, what's all the fuss about? The film centres on three American students, who decide to make a documentary about the legend of The Blair Witch. Heather, Michael and Josh head out into the Black Hills, to interview locals about the story. The locals tell them spooky tales about hauntings, witches and murderers.

They head into the woods to further explore the tales. They encounter fisherman who tell them about a girl who went missing, and then they find 'Coffin Rock', scene of a sacrificial murder. They set up camp that night, and start to hear strange cracking noises.

The following day they head further into the woods, but now they are getting lost, and getting deeper in. They find these weird stick figures dangling in the trees, and strange rock formations on the floor. When they awake the following morning, after hearing the strange noises again, they find their tent surrounded by these weird shapes.

They realise they are lost, but when they try to locate their position, Michael admits to having lost it, or rather, he kicked it into the river. When their tent starts to shake, they basically leg it - and I would do to! When it gets light, they find the tent ransacked, but mainly Josh's stuff. When he goes missing, Heather and Mike try to find him.

This is where it gets utterly terrifying. They hear him screaming, but fail to find him. The next morning, Heather finds a bundle. In the bundle is blood and its clearly Josh's shirt. She doesn't tell Michael about this. They are still lost, they can't find Josh, and they are scared. Truly, and convincingly scared. Heather videos herself apologising to everyone, before admitting how scared she is.

They continue to hear Josh scream, and Mike races to try and find him. They find an abandoned house, and Mike is still charging ahead. Heather, with the camera, tries to keep up, but Mike keeps saying he can hear Josh. He goes upstairs, then into the basement. Just like the story the locals told, she finds Mike facing into the corner, the way the murderer who claimed to be haunted murdered those children. Heather screams, and the camera falls to the floor. Then it goes totally quiet.

This film must have been so low budget as there are no special effects, no luxurious locations, no big stars, and yet its one of the scariest films out there. It gave us something new, something we hadn't seen before, and it was hold your breath and watch behind a cushion time for most of us.

This is another perfect Halloween watch, just like the others I have mentioned, don't watch it alone!!

10 Scary Films for Halloween #5 - Drag Me to Hell

10 Scary films for Halloween number 5. Drag Me To Hell.

Drag Me To Hell came out in 2009, but don't worry about it being a few years old, as it will still scare the pants off you!!

This one is directed by Sam Raimi (he of Evil Dead fame). The film is all about a bank worker Christine, played by Alison Lohman, who is brilliant in this. An old gypsy woman comes into the bank to extend her loan, but given no choice by her boss, as she wants to impress to get a promotion,  Christine has to refuse the woman's request.

Not impressed by this, the gypsy woman, Mrs Ganush curses Christine. When she leaves work, Ganush is waiting for her in the car park and attacks her. She tears a button off Christine's coat, and reaffirms the curse. Christine later goes to see a fortune teller with her boyfriend (Justin Long - Jeepers Creepers), who tells her he sees spirits haunting her in her home. That night, those spirits do indeed haunt her in some very scary scenes.

She desperately goes back to the fortune teller, who tells her that being in possession of the button, the cursed item, will draw the Lamia - a demon. He suggests a sacrifice, which Christine does. Her kitten. She even goes to try and find Ganush, but when she gets there, she finds the family having a wake for her death. Ganush is dead.

Things seem ok, so she goes to her boyfriends parents for dinner. At first, she is charming but then they think she is bonkers as the Lamia scares her with illusions and tricks that they can't see. Back to the fortune teller again, and this time they suggest a seance and the help of a medium with old ties to this demon. It doesn't work. The assistant is possessed, and the medium is killed.

Christine had just 3 days of being cursed before she is to be dragged to hell. In a last hope, the fortune teller seals the button in an envelope and tells Christine to must gift it to someone else, and in doing so pass on the curse. She tries to give it to her conniving work colleague Stu, but he is so pathetic and grovelling that she cannot do it.

She decides to find Ganush' grave and curse her with the button. As even after death, the soul lives on. She digs her up, falls into the grave, but manages to put the envelope in her mouth.

The next day, at the train station with her boyfriend, Clay. He brings out the envelope with the button in it - she had left it in his car - she had got the envelopes mixed up. Terrified, she backs away, falls from the platform into the path of the oncoming train. Before she can meet her end that way, hands come up from the ground and drag her down into hell. Clay is left on the platform holding the cursed button.

This is such a good, scary film. Another great halloween choice, and one of the most unexpected scares there is. Not predictable, and not dated, just scary. Brilliant.

10 Scary Films for Halloween #4 - Insidious

10 scary films for Halloween number 4. Insidious.

Insidious was released in 2010, and since then there has been a second installment, Insidious 2, as a result of the brilliance of the first one.

Directed by James Wan this is a truly terrifying film, with a proper scary plot line. Its stars Patrick Wilson, who featured in my previous scary film review, The Conjuring. It also stars Rose Byrne, who is off another off my favourite scary films, 28 Weeks Later.

They play a couple with 2 small sons and a baby girl. Renai (Byrne) and Josh (Wilson) Lambert, the parents, move their family into a new home. Dalton, their son, starts to hear strange creaking sounds up in the loft, but trying to investigate manages to fall off the ladder. He screams, as he sees something in the corner, and his parents come rushing to him.

Dalton seems ok, so Renai and Josh decide the loft is a no-go zone for the kids to be on the safe side. The next day though, Dalton goes into a coma like state. After three months with no change, the hospital let his parents take him home. Things get much worse once he's back.

How terrified would you be if you heard noises over your baby monitor? Yep, that's what happens. Absolutely petrifying. The burglar alarm goes off, Renai sees dark figures in the house, and gets attacked by one of them. They abandon the house. I would too -  I was by this point utterly scared.

They move to another house, and Josh's mother Lorraine joins the family. She has a dream featuring a horrible demon with a vivid evil red face, and he summons Dalton, who is still in a coma. Renai sees more supernatural beings, and its clear whatever wants Dalton is going to come wherever they move to. They decide to call in the experts.

Elise, the single spookiest character I have ever seen, is hired to investigate. She comes to the house with her assistants, and immediately Elise feels a presence. Elise sees the demon, and her assistant sketches it. Its the same red faced lovely from Lorraine's dream. The demon who wants Dalton.

The paranormal investigator tries to explain that Dalton is not in a true coma, but rather is somewhere else, leaving only his physical body. He has somehow travelled too far into the astral plane and is trapped there. The longer he is away, the more vulnerable he becomes. Josh isn't buying it, until he realises Dalton has been drawing this demon all along.

They try a seance next, but when the demon proves too strong, Elise has to stop the spirits coming through Dalton to attack them. Knowing time is of the essence, Elise reveals that she and Lorraine had to do the same thing with Josh as a child. He too was able to astral project, but his demon was a horrible scary old woman.

Elise persuades Josh to go into the scarily titled "The Further" to go and get his son back, telling him only he can do it. Josh rescues Dalton, but the usually jaunty song "Tiptoe through the Tulips" will now forever fill me with fear - you will know what I mean if you watch it!

Josh brings Dalton back, and whilst they should be celebrating, Elise is concerned. She snaps a photo of Josh sending him into a full blown rage. He roars at Elise and murders her, strangling her to death. Renai finds the camera, and sees that the photo is of the twisted dark old woman. Josh has been possessed. Josh speaks "I'm right here" but she is frozen to the spot. The old woman puffs out the candle and it all goes dark.

I can't remember ever being more scared by a film. This one is not for the faint hearted, it really is a scary film - perfect for Halloween, but don't watch it on your own!!

You can find more film reviews if that wasn't enough for you over at My Films page - just click here.

10 Scary Films for Halloween #3 - The Conjuring

10 scary films for halloween number 3. The Conjuring.

This is quite a recent film. It only came out in 2013. This is also very very scary. It centres on a couple who happen to be paranormal investigators. One of whom is played by Patrick Wilson, who is also the star of another very scary film - Insidious. The other is his wife played by Very Farmiga, who is also the star of a scary film - Orphan.

They play Ed and Lorraine. It is seriously creepy right from the get go. It starts with them listening to a story about a haunted doll. Now, I am not a doll fan anyway. I find them sinister, and this did not help that phobia at all!!

This was 1968. In 1971 another couple are moving in to their new house with their family. Weird stuff starts to happen, their dog is found dead. The scariest bit by far is the clap hands game, when someone who is not one of them claps hands! Arggghh!! Behind the pillow time for me.

The investigators are called in, and they trace it all back to a witch 'Bathsheba'. Loads of scary stuff then ensures - paranormal activity, possession - terrifying. I won't ruin the end for you, but it kind of leaves you hanging.

This one truly scared me, so is a perfect choice for Halloween scares.  You can see the full list over at My Films page by clicking here.

10 Scary Film for Halloween #2 - Salems Lot

Salem's Lot. Even the name sounds sinister. Jerusalem's Lot to give it its full and correct name. Originally a Stephen King book, released in 1975.

You will know already that Stephen King is the master of horror, and you know that as one of his books, its going to be 1 - scary, and 2 - great. Salem's Lot is quite possibly the best of his scares.

This is a classic film and is packed full of scares and jumpy bits. Its based on the book, and was released in 1979. It revolves around Ben Mears, played by David Soul. He returns to the town he grew up in, only to suspect something is wrong.

What is wrong, is that the town is being turned into vampires! A mysterious new arrival in the town, Mr Straker and his elusive and unseen partner Mr Barlow, open their new antique shop and purchase the town's alleged haunted house. The Marsten House was the scene of Mears being scared as a child. Its no less scary as an adult he soon discovers!!

Make no mistake, this is one scary, scary film. I feel made all the more so by its aged appearance. Mr Barlow is the ultimate scare - think old school vampires, but the Glicks tap tapping on the window is the single most scary scene ever. Not so much while watching but you just wait until the next time a branch taps on your bedroom window in the night!

Vampires and gothic horror at its best. James Mason as Straker was an inspired choice, but this is so well written and so utterly scary, that it couldn't fail to give you the spooks. Stephen King, master of horror at his very best here.

Be warned - if you watch this, you will never hear tapping on the window without remembering the Glicks!! Brilliant choice for Halloween this one.

10 Scary Films for Halloween #1 - Jeepers Creepers

So my first choice to kick us of for our 10 Scary Films for Halloween is the now classic Jeepers Creepers. This was released back in 2001, and was billed as an American Horror film.

Its much better than that though, so don't be put off! This is one of my favourite scary films. Its got all the ingredients to make you watch it, get a bit creeped out, but then watch it again, and again. Its become one of my horror staples.

Why is it called Jeepers Creepers? It sounds creepy for one thing, but actually its because of the old song by that plays throughout it at poignant points. "Jeepers Creepers, where'd you get those peepers". Ooh spooky.

The film focuses on brother and sister, Trish and Darry (played by Gina Phillips and Justin Long). They are driving a class big old American car, with a dodgy stick shift, down huge big empty highways that you only seem to find in the states.

An old truck harangues them, and has the licence plate "BEATNGU", before charging past them and disappearing into the distance. Just the truck itself, battered looking and scary looks terrifying enough, before we even get to see the driver!

The siblings come across an old abandoned church, and see the same truck with what looks like a body wrapped in a sheet being pushed down an old pipe into the bowels of the earth. As you do, they sneak back when the truck has gone and after falling into the pipe unintentionally, Darry discovers a really gruesome scene. The ceilings of the underground chamber are lined with the bodies of young people, who have been stitched back together and embalmed. Lovely!!

Be warned, this film will make you jump and will gross you out to at times. I won't spoil the ending for you, as this is a great film. Not an all time great - but you know what you are getting and its a fab Halloween choice.

It's makes you jump, is tense, creepy, and has just enough ghoulish factor to appeal to horror fans but with a bit of tongue in cheek dialogue that keeps it pacy and entertaining. Justin Long is convincing as a teenage dufus, with his sister being the smart one. Throw in those long American roads and creepy locations, that scary truck and voila - spooky classic. The creature, whatever it is, is one of the most horrible things I have ever seen!!

Even after you know the twists and turns when that old song cranks up "Jeepers, Creepers, where'd you get those peepers" you cant help but want to run - or at least hide behind a cushion!!

Let me know what you think of this one and enjoy. Happy Halloween #1 woooohhh!
